Bright Lights, Big Ass

Thi Self-Indulgent, Surly, Ex-Sorority Girl 's Guide to Why It Often Sucks in the City, or Who Are These Idiots and Why Do They All Live Next Door to Me?

Jen Lancaster hates to burst your happy little bubble, but life in he big city is n't all it 's cracked up to be. Contrary to what you see on V and in the ovies, most urbanites hav n't party-hopping in slinky dresses and strappy stilettos. But lucky for us, Lancaster knows how to keep thi life of the lower crust mercilessly funny and infinitely entertaining.

Whether she 's reporting rude neighbors to Homeland Security, harboring a crush on her grocery store clerk, or fighting-and losing-the Battle of the Stairmaster- Lancaster explores how silly, strange, and not-so-fabulous real city living can be. And if someon does n't like it, they can kiss her big, fat, pink, puffy down parka.

Same with the crazy drug-addict friend of their neighbor, you 're bound to find yourself living next to a crazy person at one point in time but they sually do n't walk around naked.Maybe these things really did happen to Jen but it 's toug for me to imagine based on my experiences as another ex-sorority girl living in he city which made it hard for me to ead this ook.

If you are in public place, people are bound to hink that you re a nut!

She wants things that most people only wish they could think of at the moment.

You occasionally feel sorry for Fletch ( her daughte) and Maisey and Loki ( her dogs) because they have to live with her. Why? Because though she ill have you in stitches laughing she really does seem certifiable at times and downright mean at others and some other times, just plain dumb. That does n't stop this book from being ba and it does n't stop me from anting to read her other books as well. Why? Because with all her craziness, its a wonder she 's lived as long as she has without someone killing her!

OK, irritating point# 1: In one of the irst ssays, there 's anothe guy from Texas who refers to everybody, including people in the third person singular, as " y'all. " I 've lived in various parts of the Southeastern U.S. and have yet to meet someon who does this ( unless it 's a southerner imitating a non-southerner attempting a southern dialect -- a la " Steel Magnolias. ") Wait, I 'll just go ahead and skip to the worst offense: The write is sure to include reactions of other characters whenever she makes th joke.

I 'm a little ate to the Jen Lancaster party ... I picked up anothe book from the " New in Paperback! " section of Barnes and Noble on a whim one night when I was bored and desperately searching for something to read that I ad n't already perused a million times.I realized quickly ( because it ays so on the cover) that there was ANOTHER one of thos books out there ... a predecessor, if you can ... but I opted to stick with what I ad, and go grab the secon book if I iked this one.

Suddenly, with hese orts of biographie, it does n't much matter if you read them out of order.Since reading, I have starte reading Jen 's blog (, and have notice that this woman 's not pretending (* cough* jamesfrey* cough*)- her life may neve hav the most interesting in the world, but damn, she 's hilarious.
