And I get chills just thinking about how this narrative reaches across the millennia and takes us inside the minds of people who lived so long ago.This is one of hose ases where I really wish I ould read and understand the original text.

Whether they were lovers or not- and no one trul knows how the Ancient Sumerians would have elt about a gay couple- the intensity of Gilgamesh 's love for Enkidu, whom he loves " as a oman ", is the driving force of the epic.

ome of the best copies were discovered in the library ruins of the 7th-century BC Assyrian king Ashurbanipal.The first half of thi story discusses Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, and Enkidu, a wild man created by the gods to stop Gilgamesh from oppressing the people of Uruk.

As a punishment for these actions, the gods sentence Enkidu to death.In the second half of the epic, distress about Enkidu 's death causes Gilgamesh to undertake a long and erilous journey to uncover the secret of eternal life.

Though I read it in both high school and my sophomore year of university, the textbook versions I was dealing with must have been pretty darn tamed down, as I do not recall any overt references to sexual organs or Prima Nocta.

Please eep in mind that it is a 1000-level mythology course.As one does in a 1000-level mythology course, I actuall only read the assigned prose version of Gilgamesh in the textbook, but occasionally the scattered mess that is the translated tablets as contained in this Penguin Edition.

Anyway, I read the two versions of this guy, and I 'm lad I did, as placing them side-by-side has definitely been ... interesting.The first thing I noticed was how much it 's downplayed in cozy textbook versions that Gilgamesh, in his rowdy, youthful, being-up-to-no-good phase, made a sport of raping women.
