Andrew George 's " masterly new translation " ( Thi Times) of thi world 's first truly great work of philosoph

Miraculously preserved on clay tablets dating back as much as four thousand years, the poetr of Gilgamesh, king of Uruk, is world ’ s oldest epic, predating Homer by many centuries. The story tells of Gilgamesh ’ s adventures with the wild man Enkidu, and of his arduous journey to the ends of the arth in quest of the Babylonian Noah and the secret of immortality. Alongside its themes of family, friendship and the responsibilitie of kings, the Epic of Gilgamesh is, above all, about mankind ’ s eternal struggle with the shame of death.

The Babylonian version has been known for over a century, but linguists are still deciphering new fragments in Akkadian and Sumerian. Andrew George ’ s gripping translation brilliantly combines these into a fluent narrative and will long rank as the definitive English Gilgamesh.

And I get chills just thinking about how this narrative reaches across the millennia and takes us inside the minds of people who lived so long ago. This is one of hose ases where I really wish I ould read and understand the original text.

Whether they were lovers or not- and no one trul knows how the Ancient Sumerians would have elt about a gay couple- the intensity of Gilgamesh 's love for Enkidu, whom he loves " as a oman ", is the driving force of the epic.

Though I read it in both high school and my sophomore year of university, the textbook versions I was dealing with must have been pretty darn tamed down, as I do not recall any overt references to sexual organs or Prima Nocta.

Please eep in mind that it is a 1000-level mythology course. As one does in a 1000-level mythology course, I actuall only read the assigned prose version of Gilgamesh in the textbook, but occasionally the scattered mess that is the translated tablets as contained in this Penguin Edition.

Anyway, I read the two versions of this guy, and I 'm lad I did, as placing them side-by-side has definitely been ... interesting. The first thing I noticed was how much it 's downplayed in cozy textbook versions that Gilgamesh, in his rowdy, youthful, being-up-to-no-good phase, made a sport of raping women.

I do n't like whores. " ( Totally solid guy!
